Harrow County #4
Writer: Cullen Bunn
Artist: Tyler Crook
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: August 12, 2015
Harrow County #4 focuses more on heart than horror and is all the better for it.
My most favorite thing about Bunn’s writing, which is really on display with Harrow County more so than his other books right now, is that he knows how to set up things to come in an organic, interesting way.
Over these first 4 introductory arc issues, Emmy has gotten these horrific fleeting glimpses of what’s to come, these visages of shadow and evil and even, good that all exist in a world she’s just now turning her eye to. Bunn never makes it feel overwhelming or, underwhelming however. It’s just right. We learn some but not too much. We see horrific shadow-goat-demon things but don’t learn their names because Emmy herself isn’t ready for that, yet. The pacing is slow, yes, but deliberate too.
Emmy is rooted very deeply in her human, young elements and is a good character because of it. She’s brave, scared, strong and smart but, she acts in unpredictable ways and has no real grasp on what’s happening to her. She’s a loose cannon of immense power with a childlike innocence guiding her and this issue serves as a way of establishing that as her defining traits. Not a lot happens on the surface but, character building gets its breathing room here and establishes a tone and multiple paths for coming issues to take.
It’s compelling writing that, in this issue, comes to a head when Emmy learns more about herself and the people around her. Compelling writing, that makes it so that the somewhat happy and heartfelt ending at the end of this issue doesn’t feel out of place as you can tell, something is still amiss, something wicked this way comes.
Crook’s art is as good as ever, a children’s storybook brought to life by dark forces. A lot of the characters have the same face, eyes and expressions but it’s hardly detracting from how rich and unique the art otherwise is here.
It’s impossible to talk about this issue more without spoiling things but suffice to say it’s a warmer look at Harrow County than we’ve seen, it’s a look at Emmy’s heart and, it’s a hint of what’s to come. You can’t ask for much else.
