Weekly Spinner Picks For 02/04/2015
Weekly Spinner Picks is all about the hot comics of the week and getting to know the tastes of the writers at Comics: The Gathering. Each week the CTG contributors spotlight which comics they are most looking forward to on Wednesday and how those picks got to the top of their to-read piles. Let us know if you agree or not with our picks and most importantly don’t forget to add your list!Rat God #1: This Dark Horse offering is written and drawn by one of my absolute favorites, Richard Corben. He is one of the all-time horror greats! I could just stare at his artwork all day except that it would scare the heck out of me! This mini-series is described as a backwoods terror story combining Lovecraftian mutations and Native American legends.
Nameless #1: You all know I can’t resist #1s from Image Comics! This is especially true when they give us such an amazing creative team consisting of writer Grant Morrison and artists Chris Burnham and Nathan Fairbairn. It’s being described as the ultimate horror experience. With this team I believe it!
Spawn #250: I haven’t followed Spawn in quite some time but I was one of the millions who scooped 2 copies of every issue when it was originally released. I can’t believe that was 250 issues ago! I would like to give the writer and creator, Todd McFarlane, a big congrats! This is only the second indie comic to hit this milestone! Congratulations Todd! I’ll most likely pick up a couple copies of this one just because there are numerous amazing covers honoring the issue. This issue concludes the current storyline and marks the return of my Spawn...Al Simmons!
Hawkeye #21: This week marks the return of the critically acclaimed series written by Matt Fraction and drawn by Annie Wu. It’s been quite a while since the last issue so I’m really looking forward to this one. This is the second last one for the current creative team. After this two issue conclusion Jeff Lemire and Ramon Perez take over.
Star Wars #2: I really enjoyed the first issue and can’t wait to see what writer Jason Aaron and artist John Cassaday have in store for us as the greatest space adventure continues!
ANNIHILATOR #5: I love this comic and it's almost over, which makes me sad. Morrison really hit it home with this badboy. Hopefully it continues its 10/10 run for me.
ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK #3: Another killer series with the iconic Snake Plissken taking on every bad guy in the eastern United States. It only gets better each issue and I have no doubt that this one is sure to please.
GI JOE #5: This one is getting better, but like I've said in past reviews, it just needs more action. I'm under the impression that the action will be picking up very soon and we'll be in for a real treat. There's only so much C.O.B.R.A. can do to stop the Joes.
LADY KILLER #2: I actually really dug the first issue when we had to read it for Collective Consciousness last month. It was a great idea and the art was just beautiful. I'm sure this issue will be just as good.
DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES #3: Love, love, love. Anything Planet of the Apes is sure to be really good, based on the backstory alone. I'm ready for it!

Star Wars #2: Jason Aaron did a great job re-creating the Star Wars tone that I love. The strong feeling of adventure along with top-notch characterization made issue #1 a winner in my book and I can’t wait to see where Aaron takes this story next.
Saga #25: YES SAGA IS BACK! I wasn’t the biggest fan of Saga’s third arc but the fourth one brought the series back to the top for me. I love Vaughan’s writing and there’s always a huge void in my pull list when Saga is on hiatus. And after the insane cliffhanger of issue #24, I couldn’t be more excited to read this issue.
Avengers #41: Considering the cover, it looks like this issue is going to feature the ultimates. Hickman keeps on building to that final incursion. This series is consistently my favourite read of the week, can’t wait!
East of West #17: More Jonathan Hickman is never a bad thing. I love East of West, and last issue breathed new life into this series with coming of the war. This is a comic that no Hickman fan should miss, or any fan of comics should miss.
Nameless #1: Grant Morrison. That’s my reason.
Black Vortex Alpha #1: This one isn’t guaranteed awesomeness like most of the comics on my pull list. I’m skeptical but I hope that Sam Humphries can pull this crossover off. It has a lot of issues to get through and a lot of different creative teams but hopefully this alpha issue will be good. It’s the first time Humphries gets to write a full Guardians book so that’s a reason to pick it up. Humphries has been doing such a great job on Star-Lord and I’m hoping this event will get him the praise he deserves.
Wolf Moon #3 I have never seen the werewolf done up like this and I'm pretty sure its going to completely add on to the known lore. What a fantastic read so far!
Birthright #5 It's in climax, and its a great read. The writer did a great job singling out everyones perspective before getting to this point.
Spawn #250 The original Spawn comes back. No comic in indie history has ever hit the big two five oh, as old as the Spawn franchise is; I think it has proven itself to own quite the fan base.
Black Vortex: Alpha - It's some kind of crazy cosmic Siege Perilous. Yes, please.
Ant Man #2 - Loved, loved, loved the debut issue. The deeply intricate Marvel stuff is nice, but it's great to know the editors can still put together fun character pieces like this.
Nameless #1 - Grant Morrison gets an auto-buy.
Rat God #1 - Dark Horse puts out some amazing genre work, and you had me at Richard Corben.
Looks like it'll be a good week!
