Weekly Spinner Picks For 10/08/2014
Weekly Spinner Picks is all about the hot comics of the week and getting to know the tastes of the writers at Comics: The Gathering. Each week the CTG contributors spotlight which comics they are most looking forward to on Wednesday and how those picks got to the top of their to-read piles. Let us know if you agree or not with our picks and most importantly don’t forget to add your list!
Wytches #1: This is easily the title I was most excited about announced at this past summer’s Image Expos. It features two of my favorite creators, writer Scott Snyder and artist Jock. These superstars last collaborated on the well-deserved, critically acclaimed Detective Comics run, The Black Mirror. It also marks the return of Snyder to the horror gendre. If you get a chance check out his Image mini-series Severed, amazing stuff! This series I assume will be focusing on witches and witchcraft. I’ve been purposely avoiding previews and teasers so that I can thoroughly enjoy every moment of this debut issue. I can’t wait to get my hands on this 30 page, $2.99 issue (yes that’s a DC dig!!).
Black Science #9: Another Image title in my picks this week. This is one of my absolute favorite ongoing series right now brought to us by writer Rick Remender and so beautifully drawn by Matteo Scalera. If you haven’t checked out this series yet I highly recommend you pick up the first volume of this series for $9.99 and give it a chance. You will be hooked, I promise!
Sabrina #1: I love Afterlife with Archie and I’m confident I’ll love this as well. I think it’s so cool that Archie Comics has really embraced taking their beloved characters and placing them in a horror setting. It really caught me off-guard how much I enjoyed Afterlife #1 and I’m looking forward to see if this debut will enthrall me the same way. It’s written by the same writer, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and drawn by Robert Hack.

Avengers #36
Last issue was a really interesting way of starting the time jump. Many great ideas were introduced and I’m eager to see Hickman explore them. And it’s never a bad thing to have Caselli on art duties. I’ve loved the vast majority of this series and continue to be excited for each issue.
Avengers & X-men: AXIS #1
Original Sin ended last month and Marvel are already starting up their new event. I was very disappointed with Original Sin but that won’t stop me from getting this book. With his last 25 issues of Uncanny Avengers, Rick Remender has proven that he can write event-worthy scale stories. AXIS seems to be his biggest story yet and with the excellent line-up of artists, I couldn’t be more excited for this. Remender has been killing it and I see no reason why he would falter here.
Wytches #1
I don’t know anything about this book besides the fact that it will feature witches. Scott Snyder is such a talented writer that I don’t even need to know. I’m not reading American Vampire, so I’m quite glad to be able to hop onto this series. Without The Wake, Batman isn’t enough Scott Snyder per month! Not to mention the awesome Jock working on interiors. This one should be a winner.
Sex Criminals #8
I really loved the first 2 issues of Sex Criminals but I thought the first arc’s plot dragged on through the following 3. When I opened issue 6, I expected some quirky Matt Fraction humor and witty Matt Fraction dialogue but that wasn’t what I got. What I got was one of the most intensely written comics about depression and its effects on the people it touches. It was an incredibly emotional issue and I was blown away by Matt Fraction’s honesty. This series went from being a pretty funny book with some great characters to being one of the most emotional experiences on the stands. It’s one of the most thought provoking books on the stands and it’s called Sex Criminals. Matt Fraction, you are a genius.
The October Faction #1: I loved Monster & Madman. Frankenstein and Jack the ripper were mashed up together in this series for our enjoyment. This book keeps it going with a monster hunter named Frederick Allan. His family is made up of supernatural beings too. This is probably going to go straight into my “prized” box. I literally have that much faith in its writer, Steve Niles.
Tmnt Ghostbusters #1: Last time I saw a cross over like this was during the X-Files Conspiracy books. We saw turtles, transformers and ghost busters. But not like this! The turtles wind up in what might be a different dimension, full of ghosts. And that’s where they start working with the Ghost Busters.
Punks The Comic #1: 4 very unlikely room mates get into odd situations. One’s a canine, the other a skull, the other other one is an appendage and the last guy is a president. I liked the original and I can not wait for this one!
Thanos A God Up There Listening #1: At the end of Infinity we discover Thane. Thanos’ inhuman son. Thane cant touch anyone, because they die. But Thane wants to know as much of dear ol dads history as possible. The Ebony Maw’s stories will entertain Thane.
Avengers And X-men Axis #1: In typical Marvel arc fashion, Axis will have the Avengers and X-men unite under the same banner and for the same causes. This Arc could very well prove better relations for these two groups. With a new watcher, a new man on the wall, newer stronger threats, they gotta start getting chummy if they're gonna share resources.
Wytches #1: Finally, it’s almost available. Written by Scott Snyder himself, with art duties handled by JOCK. Wytches finds itself explaining all the innocents that died because of they're being accused of witch craft. But they died knowing about the real witches. And for some reason I wonder why these folks never dimed them out.
Birthright #1: I like the title. It’s kinda reminding me of that pre determined fate thing. A family loses their son. Then he came back and things were different somehow. My curiosity has been piqued.
Klarion #1: Karion finally has a new 52 series! And he’s going to be standing up for the forces of chaos.
Annihilator #2: The first issue was so killer because Grant Morrison is a comic book legend with his pen! I just can't wait to see where this trippy "sci-fi bleeding into reality" fest goes, should be a fun ride.
Ex-Con #2: Stoked for this one based on the first issue as well. This one came out of left field with not only its story, but also its gritty Frank Miller-esque art. Can't wait to read it.
Wytches #1: I love Scott Snyder, even shared a Godzilla Experience with him and Jim Lee last year at San Diego Comic-Con. I think he's a great writer for superhero comics and I'm excited to see what he'll do with a horror comic. Another can't wait to read for me.
SUPER STOKED!!
HUGE week. fun week. gimmie them all week.
AVP Fire And Stone 1: I've been really, really, reaaaaaally into the Alien/Predator movies lately. Just re-watched them all (including Alien 4) actually. So this new Dark Horse crossover series is in my sights. Love the AVP universe, want to see where they go with this.
Sabrina 1: Absolutely love the unexpected turn Archie comics has taken with their books. No better time to start Sabrina than in October either. Looking forward to seeing if it's as genuinly horrifying and chilling as Archie has been.
Dark Ages 3: I like this Culbard/Abnett collab a lot more than their other one, Wild's End. It's very mignolaesque which I'm always drawn to and I think it has the potential to have a suckerpunch ending. We'll see!
Cutter 2: Weekly revenge story all through October with great art and great writing. Cool? Cool.
Wytches: Everyone else has already said what needs to be said but I will add that I'm especially looking forward to this because I'm from Washington State and the creepy, dark, oppresive woods that Wytches takes place in looks an awful lot like home to me.
Copperhead 2: I'm gunning for the position of Copperhead fan #1. This is the big one for me. The best number 1 I've read in a while, full of sci-fi coolness, humour and just the right amount of genuine emotion. I hope issue 2 keeps it up.
