Weekly Spinner Picks for 07/16/2014
Weekly Spinner Picks are back folks with a brand new exciting format!! For all our new CTG readers this was a weekly column where I’d write about the releases I was most looking forward to on new comic book day. That’ll stay the same along with the big change being the other writers will also be rhyming off their top picks of the week! It’ll definitely be fun to learn all the different comic tastes of the CTG writers. As always we welcome your feedback. Tell us whose picks you like, whose you don’t, and what you will be picking up. We want to hear from you so remember to leave a comment.
Without further delay here are the comics that’ll be on the top of my to-read pile this week:
Teen Titan #1: The Teen Titans title didn’t last all that long in the New 52 but DC is hoping this go around will fare better. They’ve brought in writer Will Pfiefer and artist Kenneth Rocafort for the relaunch of the title and are hoping this team can bring Teen Titans back to a top-selling monthly book. There have been some preview pages posted around the web and visually this looks like a great book. I’m hoping the story can match and since it’s a perfect jumping on point I’ll definitely give it a shot.
B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #121: As most readers know I’m a huge Mike Mignola fan and anything released from his corner of the Dark Horse universe usually makes my list. This is the second part of a short 2 issue story arc so not the greatest issue for a new reader to pick up but I’m looking forward to the conclusion of this frightening blackout in the BPRD headquarters storyline. As an added highlight, from the preview pages I've seen a young Hellboy makes an appearance! Always a nice bonus when the big red guy shows up!
Devilers #1: This one is published by Dynamite with a creative team consisting of writer Joshua Fialkov and writer Matt Triano. It’s being billed as the seven greatest exorcists pitting themselves against Satan’s army with all of creation hanging in the balance. As a huge fan of horror comics I give most new titles of the gendre a shot. Combine that with my being a fan of Fialkov and this will be one of the first things I read this week.
Secret Avengers #5: Published by Marvel comics, written by Ales Kot, and drawn by Michael Walsh this is one title that caught me by surprise. I’m not an avid Avengers reader. I find there are just way too many tie-ins and crossovers. So I don’t usually pick anything up starring the Avengers team. I picked up issues one and two of this on a whim because I liked the covers and instantly fell in love with the title. Just a fun read and you don’t need a lot of Avengers knowledge to enjoy it. So far it’s standing on its own and I’m really enjoying it.

Spinner picks? Seems legit! Here are the books I am definitely anxious to purchase.
Robin Rises Omega #1
Tomasi is writing big here folks. The battle gets crazy. The Bat folks and Ra's al Ghul's goons are at an explosive point. The icing on the cake? What really drew me here? The clash gets interrupted by Apokolips' forces. This is definitely getting collected. Art duties will be handled by the talented Kubert and Glapion.
Black Market #1
Super hero DNA, it can cure anything here. And that's what a medical examiner and his brother will quest for. Heavy weight cast of talented folks here too. It's an amazing what if. I wonder where this story will take us, and it was enough to entice me.
Dark Engine #1
Finally, from Image comics we have this gem. The main character was sent to the past to kill off her creators' enemies. Unbeknownst to the cats that made her, the engine that powers her is sentient! The present as we know it is in big trouble!
Wednesday cant come fast enough!
AND Uncanny X-Men #23: ( The Last Will and Testament of Charles Xavier ) which I'm hoping gives me some long needed closure still from the effects of AVX and the death of Charles Xavier, which hasn't quite been addressed enough in my opinion, especially if they maintain that this death is a definite long-term one. I know where most of my interests lie.
Plus not to mention Magneto #7: which continues to impress and blow me away by reminding us that Magneto isn't as passive and soft as we all thought he'd gotten. In fact after a turn of events he may be even more lethal than everyone thought-- Bunn has been knocking his characterization of Erik Lehnsherr out of the park with this one, and it looks like Hernandez is really finding his beat with the art. Always a title to look forward to.
Futures End #11 - Now that the story is in full swing this weekly series is exactly what it should be: fun. Getting to see some of my favorite D-list characters run around and knowing that the writers can kind of do whatever they want knowing full well this series will most likely be retconned within a year or two is absolutely great.
his
Rat Queens #7 - This is by far my most anticipated of the week. Rat Queens is just something special. With fantastic, funny, and emotive art and writing every issue has been a treat. The second arc seems to be taking a darker turn, but hopefully it'll do so in stride with the series special brand of humor.
First, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #36 promises lots of angst and torment for Leonardo and Splinter. Casey Jones has been hogging the spotlight lately. Let's catch up these guys.
Ms Marvel #6 is the first issue of the series without Adrian Alphona on art, so I'm feeling nervous. Can the guest bring the goods, and more importantly, when is Adrian coming back?!?!
The comic I feel most sure about is Cap'n Dinosaur. If you enjoyed Shaky Kane's last comic, That's Because You're a Robot, this looks to be another masterful, trashterful one shot.
The Wicked + The Divine #2
Gillen. McKelvie. Wilson. I've been a fan since Phonogram. They bring a great style to this book and an interesting hook. The first installment generated huge buzz, so I'm anxious to see how they follow up that debut.
Life With Archie #36
This is pure hype I'm buying into here. I've heard great things about the "Life With Archie" series. It's certainly an interesting take on the character, and it makes a great sandbox for the creative team to play in. Now that they've decided to put their toys away, they're ending Life With Archie by actually ending Archie. Like I said, it's pure hype, but it's piqued my interest.
Uncanny X-Men #23
The Last Will and Testament of Charles Xavier. I've had a middling interest in the X-Men the past few years. At one time they were my go-to book, but they've fallen by the wayside. I've been trade waiting on the two main series and skipping the other books. If Bendis is to be believed, there are big things in the pipeline for our mutant friends. I would have to assume they would start here, right? Maybe it's time to dive back into the X-World.
Pretty mainstream week for me.
Original Sin #6
I read thru the entire run of fear itself, so I don’t need to explain myself here. It’s an abusive relationship between marvel events and myself. Jason Aaron was enough of a draw and he’s doing some fun things with the story.
Silver Surfer #4
Great art with fraction keeping with his hawkeye writing style. Having someone think the name of surfers board is “Tommei” because he always says “to me, my board” was enough to keep me on until at least issue 6.
Wicked & Divine #2
Just read the first issue last night. Wasn’t the big impact I was expecting, but it I’ll try out one more issue.
my one ‘because-it’s-on-my-pull-list’ spinner pick:
New 52 Futures End #11
Why did I do this and when will it stop?
And my one “I’ll decide when I see the cover”:
Robin rises reborn or something omega
I miss Damian. Getting rid of him was such a bad move. Remember those little one shots with supergirl? I hope this means a return to that, but if the book looks a little too dramatic, I’ll pass until the Damian I remember comes back.
Oh wait.. I just looked it up. Tomasi won’t spill if it’s Damian who’s the robin that rises? Okay, pass. Someone tell me how it ends, cool?
Toribee: I didn’t know Cyclops was going to be president this week. I might check that out.
