Hideway of Horror : My Irrational Fear of Pixar's Cars

by lucstclair on June 14, 2017

On Friday, June 16 , Cars 3 opens in theatres and a chill went up my spine, I’ll explain. Like a lot of people, I love the Pixar animated movies, The Incredibles, Toy Story 3 and Monsters Inc. are some of my favorites. The very first Cars was released back in 2006, I watched it on DVD and I’ve had an uneasy feeling ever since. There’s something inadvertently creepy about a car with facial features like big googly eyes and tiny mouths. I keep thinking “Where are the humans? What happened to them?” Besides A Bug’s Life, human beings are always featured, whether they’re toy owners/collectors, super heroes or obese space travellers, the human factor is always present.

Back then I really didn’t think too much of it, but I kept dwelling on it and I finally came to this conclusion. I have a fantasy story idea in my head about an untitled Cars prequel. Planet Earth has suffered a nuclear holocaust that wiped out ¾ of the population with the rest scavenging and living in caves, which is why you don’t see them. It couldn’t have been a plague that killed them, otherwise you would’ve seen skeletal remains scattered everywhere. The poor souls who have died, their bodies were vaporized, but their souls have possessed their vehicles and morphed the front of their cars with faces. As newly metal beings, they’ve adapted to their situation and have no memory of their past lives as humans, because the EMP from the nuclear blast affected their cerebral cortex which controls memories. These “Cars” interact with each other, pumping fuel, making repairs and just living out their lives completely oblivious that they were once flesh and blood.

I thought to myself, well maybe Cars 3 will feature human beings this time, after all, the teaser trailer seems to focus on Lightning McQueen racing in a public Nascar-type competition. Nope, in the full trailer its cars watching cars race around a track. With Cars 2 pulling low box office numbers and the abysmally terrible Planes spin-off, its surprising that a Pixar went ahead with this 3rd one. Now people tell me all the time “They’re just colorful and cute cars dude, it’s perfect for kids”. I’m good thanks. Have you ever seen the movie 9? Just replace the sack-dolls with cars and you’ll see what I mean.
