Jason Todd – the Red Hood – has infiltrated Black Mask’s organization and earned his trust in order to link the Gotham City crime lord to a recent mind-control attempt on the city’s mayor.  While hijacking a weapons shipment for Black Mask, Jason comes across the other two members of the “Dark Trinity”: Artemis, an Amazonian warrior on a mission to find the Bow of Ra, and Bizarro, everyone’s favorite Superman clone.

In the last issue, we left off with the Black Mask having captured Bizarro in an attempt to turn him into a living weapon.  Jason, feeling sympathy for the newborn clone, tries to break through to Bizarro and help him come to terms with what he is.  In this issue, the fourth part of the “Dark Trinity” arc, we see that Jason’s efforts to help Bizzaro might not be very conducive to his health.  We also finally get to see what Black Mask’s endgame is, and how his plans affect Artemis’ mission to find her bow, as well as how Red Hood fits into the picture.

Like the issues before it, Red Hood and the Outlaws #4 is a text-heavy comic, but this isn’t necessarily a complaint.  The one thing that keeps me coming back every month is the fact that Scott Lobdell understands Jason is a fundamentally tragic character and that more so than any other Robin, Jason is defined by his past.  Because of this, Red Hood and the Outlaws focuses on a more introspective and emotional Jason Todd.  Showcasing a slower storyline with a more thoughtful pace, this allows us to explore Jason’s history in conjunction with his connections to the other members of the Dark Trinity.  Jason’s interaction with Bizarro in this issue is especially heartwarming, especially when he starts to talk about Gotham City like the living, breathing concrete organism it almost seems to be.

Like usual, Dexter Soy’s artwork in the issue is fantastic.  Every other flip of the page reveals a magnificent two-page spread that serves to match the slower, more deliberate pacing of the storyline.  One of my favorites is a beautiful panoramic shot of Gotham City in the morning, while Jason and Sionis are having breakfast and having a heart to heart. The shot also includes a look at Black Mask’s dining table, adorned unsurprisingly with an emblem of a mask

Red Hood and the Outlaws #4 continues the series’ trend of delivering a story filled with great character interaction, great character building and beautiful art.  The greatest accomplishment of this book month after month is how Jason is written as a character that anyone can emotionally resonate with.  If you’re looking for a feel-good story with some cool action sequences too, make sure to check out this book!
