The Wacky Announcements made by DC today
January 14,2013 - DC's April solicitations came out today and almost immediately Twitter was abuzz with cancelled titles and creative team changes. Some of these changes taking place even before the creative team had put out a single issue.
Let's start with cancellations. The biggest surprise to me was I, Vampire getting nixed. Week after week it gets high ratings and always seems to be a hot seller. It's appeared on many top ten type lists for 2012's top comics and the first trade, Tainted Love, has appeared on several best seller's lists. I just can't explain why DC would cancel this title. The other cancellations didn't surprise me as much. They are, Vertigo's Saucer Country, DC Universe Presents, and Superman Family Adventure.
The two creative team changes that really shocked me were Jim Zub is being replaced by Christy Marx as the writer of Birds of Prey and Robert Venditti will not be writing Constatine instead he is being replaced by Jeff Lemire and Ray Fawkes. What I find bizarre about this is they are being replaced before even writing one single issue! Upon further reading apparently Venditti requested to be taken off because he had to many commitments but as for Zub he was really caught off guard.
The last announcement today, which I know will get Luc excited, is that the cosmic, sci-fi legend himself, Jim Starlin, will be the new writer for Stormwatch. The artist joining him will be Yvel Guichet. I for one will be adding this title to my pull list.
So there you have it, some great news and some head-scratching news brought to us from the head offices of DC.
I am seriously upset they gave Superman Family the axe. That has been consistently one of my favorite books to reccomend for families and kids that come into our store. I don't really know what DC has to offer up now for kids. Bummer.
Sucks for I, Vampire & Saucer Country, but Jim Starlin on Stormwatch? Sounds interesting, even though I know nothing about that title, Starlin will give it a nice cosmic touch.
