B.P.R.D. volume 6: The Universal Machine

by stephengervais on April 08, 2012

Volume 6 of BPRD is another solid chapter to this franchise. The story is written by Mike Mignola and John Arcudi and the drawings are handled by Guy Davis. It amazes me how this series continues to improve. Don’t get me wrong it’s always been very entertaining but it’s evolving into a masterpiece.

The main story of this volume has Kate Corrigan travelling to France to meet an antique dealer who possesses a rare book which may help bring Roger back. Of course things do not go according to plan and Kate finds herself locked in an adventure in which she proves she’s much more than a secondary character. The side story has Abe, Liz, Captain Daimio, and Krauss sharing past stories with each other. This results in really bringing all the characters to life as we discover their concerns and more about how their lives were shaped.  As an added bonus there’s a great Hellboy appearance in Abe’s story.

The writing as usual is top notch and Davis’ illustrations accompanied by Dave Stewart’s coloring continue to bring the frightening tales of BPRD to life.
