S.W.O.R.D. #3 Review
Writer: Al Ewing
Artist: Valerio Schiti, Ray-Anthony Height, Bernard Chang, Nico Leon
Colorist: Marte Gracia
Publisher: Marvel Comics
While the world is dealing with the symbiote barrier covering the earth, S.W.O.R.D. namely Manifold in this issue sets out in search of a plan to put an end to the problem.
I have never been one for tie-in issues for an event. Whether I have been reading the event or not. The tie-in’s never really feel like they are done well. This is not the case with ‘S.W.O.R.D.’ and actually I’ve been really enjoying these tie-in issues. While I have not been reading the main event so there are moments where I feel a bit lost. This creative team manages to do a really great job at telling an engaging story with the event in the background for the most part. Most times when a series gets pulled into an event in the first few issues it struggles to find its own voice. That is not the case here. ‘S.W.O.R.D.’ definitely shines through first and the event second.
This issue was really great because we got to see Manifold spotlighted. It really got me to enjoy the character a lot more. The creative team did a lot of work explaining a lot more how Manifold’s powers work, and then giving us amazing visuals of those powers in action. The spy moments were definitely my favorite part. This team actually has a lot of really interesting mutants that as long as I have been reading the x-books, I still don’t know a lot about. That all is changing and having spotlight issues like this really is a great idea.
The only negative thing I could really say about this issue is that there are so many artists on this book that it really affects the flow somewhat. While none of the art is bad at all, the style is just slightly switched up when it changes to a different artist. I did find that pulled me out of the story a little bit. But really all the pages are still really beautiful to look at.
Overall this is one of the better tie-in books I’ve read in a long time. We got a spotlight on Manifold which really helped to give the character time to shine. I can’t wait to see what this series does once it’s out of the event.
