Arrow Season 5 Episode 10 Review
This past season, Arrow returned to form. The show delivered a satisfying season which had layers and some great action. This episode, while probably the weakest of the season, was still good. Though the ending did frustrate me. (I apologize for the short review as there isn't much to discuss this episode)
The return of Laurel Lance brought back some old feeling for Oliver which was very welcome. After two seasons of set up of Oliver's relationship to Laurel, it was nice to see a callback to what motivated Oliver in the present and the past. The unveil of Laurel being Black Siren was also a nice, but predictable surprise. While it was revealed in the trailers, I still liked how they didn’t drag it on and clearly explained why she was around. It was nice to see Prometheus at the center of Black Siren's appearance. What I really liked about this part of the episode was that in many ways theres was the official closing to Laurel’s book, Laurel being the E-1 version. With her out of the show, the producers made one of their biggest mistakes yet.
Bringing a new Black Canary to the show seems like an extremely one-sided effort to include the Green Arrow mythology in the show. Laurel is as equally important to Green Arrow as Oliver is. Even with Katie Cassidy's scheduling issues, it would have been much better to ignore this new Black Canary in favor of a possible Black Siren redemption storyline for the future.
Besides that, Felicity was a character that was written very poorly. Analyzing her dialogue showed a more abusive side to her as she bullied Oliver into accepting the fact that E-2 Laurel was not the Laurel he knew. Worst of all, Felicity punching Black Siren made no thematic sense. It made more logical sense for Oliver to take down Black Siren as it would reveal that he truly understood that there was no saving Laurel now (with the possibility to save her in the future).
The action and cgi was up to code with only a few scenes being a bit weird. Black Siren's canary cry was a bit odd at some angles and the logic of her cry did not match with her Flash appearance.
Overall, it was a solid episode but still had some clear flaws that could have been easily fixed.
