Supergirl S02E02 Review
**Spoilers**
Another solid episode from Supergirl. This season of Supergirl has started out very strong in comparison to season 1. But all good things must come to an end. The departure of Superman and Cat Grant were heartfelt and hopefully this isn't the last we see of them.
While not as entertaining or as fresh as the premiere, this episode started right out of the gate, hitting the ground running with a great action scene which showcased the actual glee of being a superhero in a positive, upbeat world. It was refreshing to see a hero having so much fun in the daylight. Very rarely do we get to see actual smiles from the heroes on the CW and them actually enjoying what they are doing. While the Flash has been the hallmark of the CW as the show with the happy and positive tone, it has recently transformed into an emotionally based tv show with barely any happy moments involving the actual central hero. It was also great to see how good a team-up between Superman and Supergirl could be. This episode laid down foundation from some plot points regarding the Super family which I hope are explored in the future. The mention of abandonment regarding Kal-El and Kara would be an excellent conflict to watch play out in the future in between Kal-El and Alex. Also while the kryptonite issue was partially resolved, I hope it does come back to create more interesting drama in between the characters.
In the workplace, we saw the introduction of Kara's new boss, Snapper Carr. While I was initially hesitant about his appearance in the show, his one line, calling Kara "entitled", was great. To see someone actually call out what was wrong with her getting this new job and how ridiculous it is to be a reporter overnight was well-deserved. Obviously with the show being mainly focused on Supergirl's/Kara's triumphs, Kara did eventually show Snapper up by showing how she does deserve this job. It led to a satisfying resolution and sets up many more divisive moments in between them.
Metallo and Cadmus were brought into the light this episode providing some interesting conflicts and team-ups. Metallo saw Martian Manhunter (have they actually called John "Martian Manhunter") and Superman teaming up which was fantastic as this is the first time we have seen them on live-screen together (not counting Smallville). It also saw the public declaration of war against aliens from Cadmus. While Cadmus is nowhere as compelling as one Reverse Flash, it secrets being shrouded in mystery does provide for some interesting drama and hopefully some satisfying reveals in the future.
A special aspect I wanted to point out was the action during this episode. I do not know if the stunt coordinator is different this season or if the directors have been different but the action has been top-notch. Aside for some logical fallacies, Supergirl has some good action and has been using their special effects to their benefit. Also the scripts have been really well-written, highlighting the human reactions and human emotions in this superhero world.
The final aspect of this episode was the departure of Cat Grant and Superman. While Superman has been on this show for a short time, his presence will not be forgotten and while it is sad for him to leave, it was probably the best move for the series. The opposite was for Cat Grant. These past two episodes have clearly shown the actual bond in between Kara and Cat and it will be sorely missed. Cat's experience and wisdom permeate through the show and its main themes for the season and her influence and humour will be missed.
**Overall Episode Grade: 8.5/10**
