Bombshells United #11 continues the story of Batwoman and The Question in World War II torn Spain. At the conclusion of the previous issue, they are greeted with the return of their adoptive son Jason, whom they had lost years earlier - and caused their split - after discovering Talia al Ghul and a lazarus pit underneath the Minotaur’s Labyrinth. These two chapters go on to concentrate mostly on the reunion, but also the advancing Black Adam as he continues to try and discover the location of this Lazarus Pit to revive his long-dead wife Isis.
That is pretty much the extent of the plot for this issue. The only real major occurrence that happened was the introduction, and subsequent abduction of Mary Marvel. This is one of those instances where, if you are a long-time reader of Bennett’s Bombshells universe, you might understand the significance of her inclusion, but as a newer reader, I wasn’t sure why I was meant to care? Is it because Mary Marvel and Batwoman had previously crossed paths? Are they best friends? Those are questions the reader should not have to ask.
Saying all this, I’m starting to see a pattern emerge with some of these weekly digital-first comics that, as a whole, does not come across as a major negative, but more of an annoyance. A lot of these chapters don’t always flow nicely within a single comic and the breaks from week to week are glaringly obvious (even if you aren’t paying attention to page count). It’s something I’d like to see creators work on because this model has proven to work in one format (digital), but has to be better translated to the other format (print).
Either way, this was still an enjoyable issue from Bennett, Andolfo and Hahn that is clearly setting up the climax of this story with the following issue.
