Secret Avengers : Mission To Mars (tpb)

by lucstclair on January 22, 2012

A secret covert team of Avengers is formed to handle the big threats that hide in the shadows, ready to strike. Led by Steve Rogers, their first mission leads them to Mars to encounter a threat that could consume the universe (doesn’t it always?). Featuring War Machine, Beast, Valkyrie, Black Widow, Nova, Sharon Carter, Ant-Man, Moon Knight and Nick Fury!

The Avengers meets Black Ops in this trade collecting their first adventure. This is a different approach for a team calling themselves “Avengers” as they use stealth, spying and infiltrating to get the job done. Let me set up the players. I like Moon Knight, I really do but I don’t understand how a super hero who dons a white costume is supposed to be “stealthy” so he can blend in the shadows. Maybe he should wear a black suit instead, but then that would contradict with his name and all. Moving along. War Machine is there for the fire power, Beast for his scientific knowledge and fighting skills, Valkyrie for the muscle, Black Widow for ass-kicking, Ant Man for getting into hard to reach places and Nova for cosmic power (unless he’s possessed by an evil force). Lead by Steve Rogers, a born leader and formally Captain America and you’ve got yourself a team of Avengers not to be trifled with.

The plot is not terribly original. We got one buried out of this world artefact old as time itself. Check. Evil incarnate waiting to be awakened. Check. A power hungry corporation. Check. Put them all together and we’ve seen it all before. It’s the team that makes this book worth reading. The back up story featuring Nick Fury just reeks of Ed Brubaker, like John Byrne the guy loves to go in the past for his stories. Written by Ed Brubaker (Incognito, Captain America) and illustrated by Mike Deodato (Thunderbolts). Originally published as Secret Avengers #1-#5. From Marvel Comics.
