There was one name that got me excited for this book, and it wasn't Slade Wilson. No this book is the return to main stream comics for Christopher J. Priest. I'm a huge fan of his Quantum and Woody run (I am the Valiant Comics reviewer on the site) and for the few issues of the Ray I've been able to read. I also read an interview with him a week or so back that was previewing the issue and liked what I read. So here we go Deathstroke. I read most of the last series featuring the character but then got bored about 12 or 13 issues in. Additionally I have read a good chunk of the New Teen Titans, so I do get the history of the character. I wouldn't say I'm the biggest fan but this will be one of the three DC books I will be reading regularly coming out of Rebirth.
The story has some good points, with Deathstroke interacting with his son's Grant and Joey on a camping trip in flash back and then the main story of Deathstroke on a job to kill the Clock King. For me the highlight is the flashback portion. While the main story is a little flat to me, I really enjoyed the flashbacks stuff, with Deathstroke being a pretty lousy father. He leaves his son Grant alone in the woods at one point, which nearly ends tragically. I do feel like maybe I've missed something by not following the character as much as I would have liked to, like I'm not sure who some of the characters are. So hopefully in the first issue that will all be explained.
The art was good, I liked it. I'm glad that Slade Wilson is back to his normal older self, as cool of a concept as the younger de-aged Deathstroke was, I felt that it had taken away that grizzled feel of the character, so I like the return of the Deathstroke we know and love.
It was an okay book that while I did like it, it maybe suffered from me overhyping it in my mind. I was expecting something really awesome, an action packed thrill ride. What we got was some great character development, with a bit of action that was actually a better mix than what I would have done. So to conclude it was a good read, with a good direction, by a good writer. A good book that will hopefully continue to build to better things in the future.
