Future State Teen Titans #2 closes this series with an epic battle, but ultimately leaves readers wanting more. While the central storyline is amazing and highlights what makes this team so great, I can’t help but feel like I came out of it with more questions than answers.
This chapter opens immediately after the close of last issue with Red X being freed to fight the Four Riders of the Apocalypse. The Titans have a plan in motion to combat this threat, but it will come at the cost of great sacrifice. Sheridan has expertly utilized these two issues to illustrate the personalities of each Titan for new readers and how their relationships have evolved over the years. Cybeast has probably been my favorite character from this series, mostly because I want to further explore their history and Sheridan has hit the mark with their sense of humor, especially in this issue. This series has also been one that benefits from reading other books in the Future State line as readers can learn more about specific characters and their histories in this universe. While the title does reach a conclusion, the events that led to this event and history of Red X are to be explored in Teen Titans Academy.
Sanchez, Ferreira, and Sandoval depict how this series embodies the phrase “Titans Together”. They display how well this team works by having characters leap to each other’s aid and having specific Titans team up to take down enemies. Sanchez’s color work here is incredible, the Titans stand out against all the chaos and wasteland and makes their movements easy to follow. Raven’s design is unique and the movement of her cloak in some panels is difficult not to admire.
Though I wish this title didn't feel so much like a setup for a new Teen Titans book, I did enjoy seeing these alternate takes on some of my favorite characters and definitely look forward to seeing more of this universe explored in Teen Titans Academy.
