Future State Teen Titans #1 bursts onto the scene and lets readers know that this is not the DC Universe they are familiar with. Titans Tower has been laid waste to, the Titans have been drastically changed, and are forced to ally themselves with the former student, Red X.

Sheridan tells this story by splicing in flashbacks before the events that lead to this devastation in order to help new readers get acquainted with the Titans and to contrast the team of then and now. While a great portion of the team gets to share the spotlight, it appears that this series will have a strong focus on Nightwing and secrets he’s kept from the Titans. I love Sheridan’s approach to this title and how naturally the Titans come across in their interactions, especially Starfire and Nightwing.

If there’s one thing to look forward to in the Future State line, it’s seeing all the alternate costumes and Sandoval, Tarragona, and Sanchez absolutely deliver on that front. There’s a lot to unpack with Dick’s costume, but Emiko and Raven’s are so incredible and my favorite for this first issue. It’s a difficult task to avoid confusing readers when flipping between different points in time, but the artists do a magnificent job of distinguishing each with lighter tones and the hardened expressions of characters.

There’s tons to enjoy in this title! With easter eggs strewn about the pages, amazing art, and a killer story, this is a Future State series you’ll want to be sure to pick up.
