I would say with Tynion’s Detective Comics, for the most part it is really good, however there are times when I do waiver on that. I thought the first arc was really strong and as someone who’s favorite character is Tim Drake, he really did do the character justice. The Victim Syndicate was an interesting concept and had its high and low points, but I didn’t think it was all that good. The idea of having character-focused arcs was really cool and for the most part I would definitely say it’s working. In this arc and issue especially we see it be a Cass focused arc and it’s really good, especially how it ends.
Having said that one complaint I do have about this issue, is it make Ra’s seem afraid of Lady Shiva, which is really out of character for him. However there could definitely be a reason for this, and the rest of the book is solid. When Ra’s and Batman are discussing it really actually convinces me as well that Ra’s is worried about what Shiva can do and that is really a testament to Tynion’s writing. The art for this issue is also not really strong. There is not really a lot of detail done in regards to the faces.
We also get the reveal about the League of Shadows and there is a really interesting method of why Batman didn’t know that they existed. On the other half of the story Jacob Kane and the Colony members that were trapped are broken out by the rest of the Colony and they are really planning to cause a lot of destruction in the city, just to take out the League of Shadows.
Tynion really broke down the Bat-family in this story arc, and it was done really well. Typically with superhero comics we always know the good guys are gonna win, somehow, and what really matters is the stakes. At the end we are definitely shown that the stakes are high.
