Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #17

by Hussein Wasiti on March 22, 2017

Writer: Robert Venditti

Artist: Ethan Van Sciver

Colours: Jason Wright

Publisher: DC Comics

This very well might have been the best issue of the series yet. It felt very fresh when it came to the story, but it slyly tied into Rebirth is such a way that makes the whole title feel more significant, that the Green Lantern Corps also have a part to play, beside the current mystery surrounding Superman that will be solved by the conclusion of Superman Reborn.

First off, this was Ethan Van Sciver's best art on the series yet. This is mostly due to the story taking place in areas on Mogo that break away from the typical green/yellow colour scheme that the series has been stuck with so far. Blue skies and lush environments made this issue feel even more special. There is still the green/yellow scheme, but it didn't feel as invasive. Jason Wright's colouring made this issue, in essence. It highlighted the detail and majesty in Van Sciver's art.

As for the writing side of this issue, Robert Venditti is doing his best work here. While John unfortunately had to take a bit of a back seat here, Venditti focuses on Guy, Hal, and Kyle. Guy is recovering from the fallout of last issue's epic fight with Arkillo. He has a moment here that felt like a giant, well-done payoff to Guy's flashbacks to his father last issue.

As for Hal and Kyle, they get the best story of the issue. It kind of comes out of nowhere initially, but it was gripping and very Kyle-focused, which is always satisfying. The cover of this issue stupidly spoils the story, which I will never understand, but it sure looks nice.

Robert Venditti and Ethan Van Sciver craft the best issue of the series so far, which is unsurprising given it spends most of its time focusing on the characters, their relationships, and the bigger Rebirth implications presented here.
