Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #7

The moment we have all been waiting for is finally here. It is willpower versus fear, green versus yellow, and Hal versus Sinestro. The Sinestro’s Law arc comes to an exciting conclusion in Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #7, and it is one that will surely shake the foundation of the series and cause reverberations to be felt for many stories to come. Although it was predictable that it would come down to Hal versus Sinestro in a spectacular battle of light from the very first issue of his run, Robert Venditti still manages to throw in one or two surprises that will catch even the most attentive of fans of guard.
The issue opens, as all great conclusions should, at the beginning. This is not the beginning of the story arc but rather Hal Jordan’s beginning on his path to bravery and self-sacrifice. Reminded of his father’s and Abin Sur’s “blaze of glory” death’s, Hal prepares for his final stand on Warwold against all Sinestro has to offer, a stand that he has no doubt will cost him everything. Once Sinestro orders all of his soldiers away, he reveals that his plan is not to destroy Hal Jordan but rather convince him to join the yellow lanterns of fear. Through flashbacks we are reminded that before they war enemies, and leaders of opposing Corps, they were allies, a teacher and his student, pledged together in defending the universe from disorder and despair. Although Sinestro has taken the role of villain, and worn it with such aplomb, there is no doubt that in his mind his mission has remained the same. Whether he wields the green light of willpower or the yellow light of fear, he will do everything he must to preserve order in the universe, and how better to do that than with his old protégé at his side once more. An interesting take on the relationship between these two characters, who are all too often pegged as enemies with no regard to their shared history and the bond they once shared. Of course, Hal is having none of this, having seen first the horrors that Sinestro’s methods have unleashed upon the universe, now determined more than ever to put a stop to his plans. With helpful interventions from the supporting players, and some truly incredible constructs, the final battle of these two champions of their spectrum is definitely something true fans will not want to miss.
The conclusion to Robert Venditti’s first arc of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps is probably the strongest issue yet. It builds upon the history of the entire Green Lantern franchise to bring the series to new and uncharted territories. Anchored by stellar artwork and colors by Rafa Sandoval and Tomeu Morey, this issue a pleasure to see as well as read. While there is now telling where this series will go after the game-changing finale, one this is certain. If Venditti continues to drive the series to new and exciting places, then it will certainly be one that you will want to pick up.
