All-Star Batman #2

It’s not often we get a series that consists of two different stories in one book, and All-Star Batman is just that. But does that affect the quality and flow? I’m a firm believer in yes it does. More isn’t always better, and as much as I am really enjoying the first story, then second just seems to lack the energy of the first story.
Scott Snyder proves in this series that he truly understands the Dark Knight, and with “My Own Worst Enemy” we are getting an epic story trying to reach the acclaimed level of Jeph Loeb’s Hush, and The Long Halloween. This story bounces all around to different time frames and that keeps you guessing what happened? Who’s on who’s side? And can Batman get out of this one alive? This issue especially brings in more classic villains that we know and love for their shot at taking down the Bat. Snyder is just oozing excitement with this story and continues to keep you on the edge of your seat wanting to read more.
It’s only when we are taken to the supplementary story “The Cursed Wheel” that we are then jolted out of that epic story that we just really found the grove with and thrust into a more Introspective, new recruit training, detective style story. Which on it’s own would be an adequate story, but placed almost seamlessly at the end of the previous story, the flow just goes out of wack. I much would have rather them saved the secondary story for the next story arc or put it in another Bat book altogether.
“My Own Worst Enemy’ has John Romita Jr. doing the pencils. Taking a look at this story on it’s own, I am a big fan of it but I really feel the art is what is pulling this story down from being amazing. Romita’s style is almost too juvenile for a story of this calibre. His pacing and flow is perfect; I will definitely give him that. But to raise a story like this to share a mantle with other great stories like the previously mention two, we need an artist with more dynamic and drama. We need more crisp colors that the muted water colors Dean White is bringing us. DC has some great teams under it’s employ and I just feel the wrong decision was made here.
Overall this is a solid issue and series that I do recommend picking up. Some people may also be a fan of Romita’s style and think I’m just crazy. You can’t please everyone, but for me Snyder’s story “My Own Worst Enemy” is what really shines. If it was its own self contained series and didn’t have the secondary story this series would definitely rate even higher than what I have given it. But don’t let that stop you from picking it up.
