Green Lanterns #2

Last time on Green Lanterns, some heavy stuff was going down thanks to Atrocitus, leader of the Red Lanterns and his plan to conquer Earth in order to save his Corps. We also find Jessica getting into a pickle, and Simon getting a little bit stronger.

This issue I would say kept its momentum from the last, for the most part, which is excellent. This issue picks up right from where the last left off after Atrocitus speaks his mind for a bit. In this issue, we learn a bit more about Jessica and her relationship with her sister. Building up this supporting cast bit by bit is an excellent way to showcase why exactly these characters were granted with their rings in the first place; through their relationships, we see how the likes of Jessica expresses her will, despite her flaws, and even the fear she holds within.

The book keeps up the dual narrator mechanic, and it still shines just as brightly here.

Halfway through the issue, the action  dies a little bit for the sake of fleshing out Jessica’s relationship via a flashback. I didn’t think I was going to like it, the pace breaking, but I changed my mind when it didn’t last through the whole issue, and it was still fun in its own right. Even Jessica’s ring gets to show some of its personality, which can even be pretty funny at times. The humor is obviously welcomed.

While this was more of Jessica’s issue, Simon shows up as well, and we are teased a bit more of his burgeoning “Emerald Sight” ability. Hopefully this ability doesn’t conveniently solve any problems, but if it does, at least they are building up to it.

The art is wonderful as well. One panel that stuck out to me was Jessica and her sister looking up to an aurora, and the contrast between it, the characters, and the sky made for a nice visual. The parting image for the teaser at the end, was quite remarkable too. My only complaint, while minor, is that Jessica in her Corps suit gave off the “painted-on” vibe to me, at least a little bit. Nothing major, really.
