Things have not been looking good for Warcraft at the domestic box office. This weekend, the film will battle its way to a $30 million opening weekend against The Conjuring 2 and Now you See Me 2. Warcraft is currently being bashed by critics, hurting its domestic prospects. This opening would likely be considered a flop given the film’s $160 million budget. Duncan Jones has repeatedly stated that he wants to make a trilogy out of Warcraft and the domestic troubles made me reluctant to think he would get the chance.

Apparently there are a lot of fans of Warcraft in China because the film opened to a whopping $46 million single day opening at the Chinese box office. The film’s foreign numbers are coming in impressively high Just enough to compensate for the low domestic numbers. To contextualize, the previous record holder was Avengers: Age of Ultron with $28.6 million. Age of Ultron finished its Chinese box office run with $240 million. I would now expect Warcraft to finish around $280-$300 million.

Mr. Jones may be looking at decent chance at making a sequel after all.
