This issue is blood soaked. We definitely get a story that lives up to the books title. The Eternal Warrior brings the Wrath. It opens with an introduction of a character who isn't named in this book, but is very familiar to long time Valiant fans. I won't spoil it, but this plot development is exciting. After the first couple pages showing what has become of Gilad's kidnapped son Kalam, we spend the next 17 pages or so watching Gilad murder everyone.

Juan Jose Ryp's art in this issue was spectacular. Every page is brutally and inventively violent. In one of the opening scenes we see Gilad scaling a castle wall then grab a guard and hold him over the wall to get the information he needs in stereotypical Batman fashion. Unlike Batman however the Eternal Warrior gets what he needs and promptly cuts the head off the guard. The violence and gore only escalates from there. I counted around 30 deaths caused by our hero. Ryp beautifully renders these fatal assaults, giving us detail that doesn't come across as cartoony or over the top even those the violence in this issue could have ended up that way in less capable hands. The panels are packed with detail. It's a great book to look at, as was the last issue. You could potentially take all of the dialogue out of issues 5 and 6 and you would be able to follow the story. The colours fight the art style nicely. Although I do enjoy Raul Allen's art from the first arc and I am sure I will enjoy it in the next one, I am definitely sad that Juan Jose Ryp will not be on the next book.


Robert Venditti is a master at planting seeds that will pay off later on down the road. The pacing of the series so far has been kind of slow up to this point however. I trust Venditti enough to think that this is more then likely deliberate. The story seems to be taking another turn, I'm not sure where we are going, but I'm excited to be along for the ride.

The art is stellar. The story is slowly moving from point A to C back to B, but it's been a fun ride so far. The return of a classic Valiant villain is exciting. If you like blood in your comics this one is for you. This is not a book for children. Excited for the next story arc.
