Ant-Man has been my favourite new Marvel series since Hickman’s Avengers titles launched. Now that those are ending, Ant-Man is my favourite Marvel comic. In three issues, Nick Spencer has crafted one of the most humorous comics of the decade and created was is likely to be a defining Ant-Man run. Last issue brought a little more darkness into this world of c-lister and instead of being detrimental to the tone, Nick Spencer made it work. Issue #4 somewhat resembles its predecessor in that sense and it upholds the quality of this extremely overlooked wonder.
Ant-Man #4 takes the time to introduce us to a new character in this books growing cast. The Machinesmith attends Bear’s super villain anonymous group (genius) and is brought into this story for his hacking skills. Fittingly, he is introduced performing at a children’s birthday party (amazing right). I loved this character right off the bat. He fit right in to this group of lame heroes/villains. There’s something extremely compelling about the villains and heroes that don’t “matter” and Nick Spencer taps into that element fantastically. Every character is a well-defined and likeable presence.
Ramon Rosanas is equally integral in the quality of this book. It’s become increasingly scarce for Marvel Comics to maintain a monthly book with one artist and I’m glad Ant-Man falls into the minority. Ramon’s pencils are very Samnee-esque while standing on their own as well. The simplicity complements Nick Spencer’s script and bolsters the comedic tone. Rosanas is a valuable asset that should stay on this book for its entire duration.
Ant-Man #4 continues this series’ incredible hot-streak by introducing a new compelling c-lister and moving the plot along at a great pace. Nick Spencer has made Ant-Man a charming family drama at the core and that’s what makes it so special. Ant-Man is laugh-out-loud funny, fun and engaging but the underlying theme of family elevates this comic onto Marvel’s throne. Hickman’s Avengers titles are done, it’s time for Ant-Man to take my top spot.
