The Walking Dead #139
Written by: Robert Kirkman
Art by: Charlie Adlard, Stefano Guadiano, and Cliff Rathburn
Well we're on the cusp of something really big and I can feel it in the air. Isn't that hard to figure out since there were two issues this month and we're delving ever so deeper into the dynamics of the relationships since we traveled forward in time. This issue was about Rick and and the return of Michonne mostly. She had been absent for about 13 issues and her fans had been sending letter after letter to Kirkman asking where she was. He answered cryptically and many thought she was going to end up being on the opposite side of good when the dust settled. Turned out that wasn't the case. She's reintroduced looking like a freakin' pirate! But she's only a fisherman for Rick's group. Carl runs into some trouble but handles it in Carl fashion. Good momentum building...
Kirkman once again shows us why he's the be all end all of compact comic writing. There was maybe 20 lines of dialogue in this issue, but there were 3 stories going on at once and they were all articulated beautifully. You can't for anything more from good writing. Concise and minimal. The plot is also chugging along very steady and seems to be hitting a plateau soon. Knowing Kirkman, it'll be pretty good. Can't wait.
The art team are the black and white magicians that we all know and love. This issue they had to draw a believable ocean and guess what? They did it with ease and made Michonne look badass as a fisherwoman. I really have to hand it to them because it seems like there isn't a scenario they can't turn black and white with a few lines of shade and shadow. They truly are another level with their art and it's always a good palette cleanser whe you're constantly bombarded with color all the time. Great stuff.
As with all the other issues...PICK IT UP! Great issue.
