This issue shines, with an earnest "coming of age" story.

We revisit the city of Shu and thereby Chenglei, as Ellis focuses on filling us in on what’s transpired since his last encounter with Zhen. He expands upon what we thought to be an innocent country mouse character, who over time has proven to needed Shu, as much as Shu may come to need him. It’s a side story yeah, but one of self-discovery hinging a lot upon human feeling and nontraditional views on gender and sexuality; one that might hit close to home for those who might have grown up in smaller, more conservative communities.

Even Eligia’s character becomes a little less one-dimensional as she finally starts to moves towards her overarching motive, and gaining what could be helpful leverage for her and Luca’s future endeavors. Marsh’s (of the Arctic research outpost) fate is also revealed, and the attack being mounted against the Somalian tree continues, as the entire world watches to see how this will differ from other (failed) past attempts.

All in all, it remains that character development and social elements remain the driving forces of Ellis’s story, but this was a large improvement over last issue, and made good use of all that was set in place previously. Maybe next time, we’ll actually see some action; who knows?
