Godzilla: Cataclysm #2

Godzilla is a powerful figure in popular culture and in his own universe. We all know this to be true. Add in other monsters that he is unfriendly/friendly with *ahem*Mothra*ahem* and you've got a battle of epic proportions. This is what Godzilla fans crave and what creators of Godzilla movies and other media usually dole out. This issue is not surprisingly chock to the brim with kaiju fighting! It's so awesome to see these monsters that we all know and love duking it out in comic book form. Of course there's a human story and element to it, which has...I'm assuming...been the catalyst in the story to us. We apparently have to have some sort of connection to 300ft tall monsters in order to be interested in the story. In some cases I'd agree, but Godzilla is so well known that there should be whole issues with no human interaction whatsoever. Later for that!
Speaking of the human story, Bunn really knows how to lay it on thick with the metaphorical and metaphysical backstory of both the humans and the monsters. I'm truly digging this run because he understands how to separate the two and how to work with the sum of both parts. He paints a picture of the humans acting just as primitive as the kaiju, religious sacrifices and all. Really nice touches to the main character's world view in relation to his age also bring out the best in this comic. Bunn makes the improbable, probable. And the mundane, dane.
Wachter is one of those artists that just captures the mood from the first panel and into the last. His technique of meshing dull colors and black and white with solids is so tension inducing that I thought at any moment that Godzilla was going to spring up and into the village where the main character lives. Luckily for me, my fears are left surmountable until the last panel and I'm also left with needing more. That's good artistry if I've ever seen it.
Love this comic and it's shaping up to be a great addition to the Godzilla franchise. BUY IT!
