God Hates Astronauts #1
If you don't think this comic is funny, don't talk to me.
Writing and art: Ryan Browne
Color: Jordan Boyd
Publisher: Image
It's here, the Image published and newly ongoing run of Ryan Browne's incredibly successful webcomic, God Hates Astronauts, and I'm going to come right out and say it: It's the funniest comic I've ever read.
First, a little history: Browne started publishing God Hates Astronauts himself back in May 2010 in webcomic form. It quickly got a lot of attention for its comedic efforts as well as its irrevent and hilarious storytelling similar to the attention Axe Cop, a very similar book, has recieved. This new issue 1 is an Image published book that continues/retells the story contained in that webcomic. Essentially, it's about a team of NASA funded superheros who are employed to bring an end to the recent uprising of a group of crazed asto-farmers some of whom are led by a cross-eyed man in love with a chicken he named Hennifer. Seriously.
This book is completely self indulgent, it spares no insanity, irrelevance or absurdity and, it works simply because of that. The jokes are chilidsh, vulgar and nonsensical but they have a unique and real heart. Browne's hand crafted space fight love baby is just as good here as it was in its webcomic form. This comic reads like a love letter to every 13 year old kid who is now 25 but never really grew up anyways.
The colors pop, the art is as hilarious as the writing and the sound effects are the most creative and uproarious I've ever seen in a comic. For example: one main character is literally named King Tiger Eating A Cheeseburger and late in the comic a sound effect attributed to his actions is "BURGER CRUSH" you know...because he crushed a burger...of course.
I don't want to give too much away so I'm just going to say this: If you think comicbooks have been a little too serious lately, if you need a break from the grim-dark world of superheroism, if you want to laugh a belly-shaking laugh, pick up God Hates Astronauts. It doesn't take itself seriously and it invites you to not take it too seriously either. It's a breath of fresh air so breath in and then laugh out.
