Weekly Spinner Picks for 01/22/2014
Wow this month is going by fast! I can’t believe we’re nearing the end of January. I find when collecting comics and looking forward to new comic book day on Wednesdays it really speeds up the weeks. You have the first half of the week where you look to see what’s coming out, then Wednesday hits and you buy your goods, and then you have the second half the week to enjoy them. The whole cycle is actually one of the things I love about collecting comics; it adds a special facet to each and every week. So without further delay here are the books I’m most anticipating this week. Tell us what you are looking forward to below in the comments section.
Hacktivist #1: This is one I’ve been looking forward to since I heard about it. It’s being published by Archaia and is the brainchild of actress Alyssa Milano. Upon researching this book I learned that not only is Miss Milano a talented actress I grew up watching on Who’s the Boss but she’s also a major philanthropists whose work experiences around the world were the inspiration for this idea. The story is written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly with the art duties handled by Marcus To. The story revolves around two super-hackers initiating a social revolution much like last year’s Arab spring uprisings. I have a feeling this will be the comic of the week for me. I can’t wait to read it.
Deadly Class #1: This one is brought to us by Image Comics and with their track record the past 2 years I always give their new titles a go. This one is really a no brainer for me as it is written by one of my favorites, Rick Remender. The art duties are handled by Wesley Craig. The story follows our protagonist trying to survive high school. He’s got a crush on the popular girl, the jocks pick on him, and he’s constantly daydreaming. What?? You say boring! Well here’s the twist, this high school is where top crime families from around the world send the next generation of assassins! That’s right this is the most dangerous high school in the world. Oh and its set in 1987, one of my very own high school years. Should be a good one!
Eternal Warriors #5: This series has had some ups and downs in its first arc but has been loaded with tons of promise. I think this will be the issue that brings it up to par with the other constantly top quality Valiant titles. There has been a pretty book push from the publisher for this issue and I have faith it will deliver. It’s being labeled as the first in the next wave of Must Read Valiant stories and a great jumping on point to the universe. The writing duties are being handled by Greg Pak with art by Robert Gill. The story has our warrior building a bridge from the present day to far in the future, 4001 AD! 2000 years in the future has earth transformed by science, technology, and war. Will it mean a dawn of a new era for our heroes or death? Should be an action packed adventure!
Hawkeye #16: Is it just me or does it seem like it’s been a while since we’ve had a new issue of Hawkeye? No matter, it’s always one I’m looking forward to. It’s written, as always, by Matt Fraction with art by Annie Wu. It continues the adventures of Lady Hawkeye, Kate, as she’s still out west and helping a 60s music icon recover his lost masterpiece.
Hope everyone has a great week and Happy New Comic Book Day!
