Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #6
Writer - Christopher Yost
Art - Marco CHecchetto, Rachelle Rosenberg
The Superior Six is a somewhat ridiculous concept, but it works. SpOck mind controlling his old cohorts into superheroic efforts? Cheesy enough to work. Last issue started the story roughly, but it is picking up here. SpOck haters can say what they may, but between Slott, Spencer and Yost we are experiencing probably the best Spider-Man stories in recent memory.
This may be a middle-of-the-road, but it manages to pack a decent story and some quality moments into its pages. There is more to like than groan about, which is more than I can say about recent issues of the core title. One of the easiest ways for a comic to fall apart quickly it's by overloading on its cast. This was a real threat here based on the number of villains the already numerous Superior Six wing up dealing with, but the team does well. More importantly, the characters have room to breathe and things feel dynamic. This is probably more praise for the artist, but I think everyone handled the cast well.
This seems to be the setup issue for next month's finale. My biggest gripe is that I didn't know that going into this book. I'd like a "Part X of X" before the story so I know how it is going to flow. Regardless, this sets up the finale really well. The inevitable, of course, congress to pass at the most inopportune time for SpOck. I think the ending may have actually saved this issue from being totally mediocre.
The Verdict...
A good book. The story is fun, and the art handles the heavy lifting well. I'm looking forward to the conclusion of this story more out of interest than the desire to get to whatever is coming next.
