Blood Brothers #1
American Vampire, 30 Days of Night, The Strain, I, Vampire, B.P.R.D. Vampire, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the list of vampire comic books can go on for pages and pages, so the question is; do we need another vampire comic book series? Well, if we can get American Vampire quality books every time, then yes. But do we need a book like Blood Brothers?

Blood Brothers #1 tells the story of two vampires, Nick and Tree, who are eking out a miserable existence by bounty hunting for blood money. After a thousand years on this earth, the fearsome duo has grown despondent and frankly, bored. While Nick looks for love from a human girl, Tree is content with his meagre existence, until Nick’s love encroaches upon his relationship with Tree. The two are at wits end with each other until Nick’s girlfriend is kidnapped and the two decide to go save her, Double Dragon style.

Blood Brothers #1 tells a simple story with a unique premise. While far from original, the two titular characters have enough chemistry that the premise becomes mildly interesting. As stated, this story is far from original, but it’s not overly terrible. It exists in a comic book limbo, that fine line between ‘meh’ and ‘wow’. You can read the book and not feel anything in particular about any aspect. It kind of just ‘is’. While the story was enjoyable, it’s wholly forgettable and in this day and age, with the shelves brimming with outstading books, Blood Brothers #1 doesn’t offer anything interesting enough to make it a ‘must have’. If you want another vampire tale, than by all means, go right ahead. But it’s far from the best.

The art is serviceable as well. Shaner has a natural talent for panelling with comedic precision which helps the jokes move along at a brisk pace. Yet, like the script, there’s just no emotional investment. Each scene goes from one to the other with no real hook. It’s a shame because the book is nice to look at, especially the colours by Dan Jackson.

At the end of the day Blood Brothers #1 just doesn’t bring enough to the table. It’s not bad, there’s just no room for it amongst the already outstanding vampire tales out there on the shelves. While the series may pick up steam, grabbing it issue by issue at this point just doesn’t seem like a viable option.
