New Mutants #13 Review
Writer: Ed Brisson
Artist: Rod Reis
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Magik helps to prepare Cypher for what is to come as one of the chosen. While many wish him to find a replacement he knows that the rules are set and he has no choice.
I found this chapter frustrating. Yet it was also really interesting to have an issue devoted to Cypher. Where I’m frustrated with it is that I feel that Ed Brisson doesn’t fully understand Cypher and his abilities. The way he writes Cypher is basically just as an interpreter. His mutant ability to know language has so many other uses. Like when he is fighting he can actually read a person’s fighting style as a language and use it against them. While Brisson does touch on that further into the issue, I feel this should have been something Cypher was honing from the get go. It just seems like a missed opportunity to portray Cypher as weaker than he actually is.
The art in this chapter is where the book really shines. It is some of the most breathtaking pages of the entire event so far. Where this issue lacks, the art really works hard to make up for it. There are so many panels I had to just stop and stare at. This is a beautiful issue for sure.
Overall this was an alright chapter to the event. Getting to have one focused on Cypher was great, even if it had some missed opportunities.
