Stillwater #1 is the cherry on top of the sundae that has been this amazing week of new comic releases. If you’re a horror fan, check out this series cause it’s off to an incredible start!
This issue opens with a look into the life of Daniel West, who’s straight up not having a good time. Daniel’s life seems to be crumbling around him and when he receives a letter from a distant relative, he and his friend Tony head out to the town of Stillwater. They only get a glimpse of the strange happenings in this town, but they quickly become very aware of the threat of Stillwater.
That Zdarsky fella sure can write, huh? He sets up a very intriguing premise and develops the relationship between Daniel and Tony nicely. I love the banter they have through their panels together and genuinely feels like a friendship that’s been forged over years. There’s little of Stillwater shown, but enough details are divulged to pique curiosity and have readers drawn in to want to explore further.
I love the cover to this issue; my eyes were immediately drawn to it when seeing it on the New Releases shelf at my shop. The red is so striking, I love how the yellow font and design of the title emerge from the cover. The interior art by Ramón K. Pérez and Mike Spicer is no different. From the cover, you expect a bit more of a grim design, but Spicer’s colors are vibrant and warm, which added a slight eeriness and tension build when reading this issue cause you’re waiting for that shift to happen.
I love me a good horror title and if you’re of like mind, definitely pickup Stillwater #1, it’s sure to have you hooked by the last page.
