Star Wars Adventures #30 Review
Writers: Michael Moreci, Cavan Scott
Artists: Arianna Florean, David M. Buisan
Letterer: Jake M. Wood
Publisher: IDW
This month's issue of Star Wars Adventures kicks off a new trilogy of primary stories set in the Sequel Trilogy era. This one is an adventure between Supreme Leader Kylo Ren and General Hux, with the two of them investigating an isolated planet and being forced to work together. The backup story is a first for the series: it is the first in a three-part story that focuses entirely on the Graf team onboard the Star Herald.
I'm very happy to see this trilogy of issues being written by my two favorite writers of the series, Michael Moreci and Cavan Scott. This is also Moreci's first issue writing the primary story rather than the backup, it's nice reading something from him that gets a higher page count and a little more room to breathe. This isn't the first time we've had a "Hux and Kylo must survive on an isolated forested planet" comic but the execution is different enough that it isn't distracting in any way, though I think I may enjoy Age of Resistance - General Hux a bit more. The two of them always have great banter and I was very happy that Vendaxa was used for the story. It's always nice to explore a planet that only really existed as a statsitic in reference books previously.
It's great to get a story focusing on the Star Herald completely in the backup. I'm not too invested in it yet but it is just a short backup, I'm glad it's getting three full issues to tell a single, complete story. There are some fun continuity nods in it too, as to be expected from Cavan. The art is solid in both the main story and the backup. Florean is usually on of my favorite artists to work on the series, though admittedly there was a face or two in her story that distracted me a bit.
This was a very solid issue, about what I would hope for as a baseline for the series. I'm glad the creative team will be staying consistent for a bit, and it's nice to finally be able to get regular, low-stakes publishing taking place after The Last Jedi. I can't wait to see what Moreci does with Rey next month. Judging from the cover, it looks like Rey has her lightsaber, which is good. I'm a bit tired of the Rey on Jakku stories we've gotten quite a bit of over the last few years, especially since they retread each other sometimes. I'm hoping for something after The Last Jedi, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it no matter what.
