Justice League #39 Review

Well, here we are again, the end of another comic series written by Scott Snyder. I feel like this has been a trend for me lately, but luckily when it comes to Snyder, the end of one series equals the beginning of something even more amazing! It is only by chance that I started reviewing Snyder’s Justice League run. I was so backed up with other Batman stories, that it took me forever to find the time to start issue #1 and get caught up, but man am I so grateful that I did! Covering Justice League has been one of the highlights of my time here writing these reviews. It’s been one of only a few books I review that I get amped up to read every time I see it come up on my review list. I am sad that this will be the last issue done by Snyder and Jorge Jimenez, who has been a key part of the series, bringing Snyder’s story to life visually, but I am excited to see what’s to come from the current creative team and to see where Justice League goes from here with Robert Venditti amd Doug Mahnke taking it over.
Justice League #39 takes us right back where #38 left off, with Martian Manhunter having been brought back to life by his son Shayne’s sacrifice. The League has given everything they have to the fight and have no tricks left up their sleeves. This issue is such a rollercoaster, and in true Snyder fashion, we are taken on one hell of an emotional roller coaster ride. Every time it feels like the League has an advantage, it turns out Perpetua is one step ahead of them and this makes for a very emotional and heart felt battle all the way to the very end. This issue really surprised me with the events that occur and when I got to the very last page I was left with my jaw almost on the floor. Just such an amazing way to end what’s been an incredible story arc and Snyder leaves us, the reader, to imagine what’s to come next which is why I’ve always thought so highly of him. There are also some bigger themes in this issue that easily relate to the state of the world we really live in and it makes you think about the amount of disconnect we have now in our society and that if these events happened on our real earth, it could easily go the same way. Just genius writing by Snyder that makes you take a second and think about our own personal lives and how we’ve all disconnected and what we can do to fix that. Could it be our own demise? If so, we have no Justice League so who’s going to save us?
The art of this issue is a bit different then what I’m used to in Justice League. I’m not sure why they decided to do a split book with three different artists, but the end result is beautiful just the same. I did notice the difference between the two parts of the book and usually that bothers me, but the way this stories plays out, it works to keep it all together and make sense without spoiling anything for you guys. The art is all flawless and there is some really amazing panel work and breaks that flow with the emotions of the story. All the character designs are beautiful and there is zero issue with inking or colors taking away from the original artwork. Everything flows together beautifully and makes for one amazing visual to go with an amazing story. The lettering of this issue is all clear and easy to read and even the colored backgrounds blend well with the wording at times where it is used. You can tell the art team all made sure to work together so as not to distort things or make things look awkward at times where the artist changes and it all made for an amazing look overall.
Everything about this issue is just flawless and really is one hell of a way to end things for the exiting creative team. The story leaves off with a chance for the new team to come in and create their own amazing arcs to follow and I really hope the new team is able to keep Justice League going in the right direction because this is a story that has deserved so much better for so long and Snyder was able to put it back on the map for us fans and deliver something we have been wanting for so long in this series. It’s big shoes to fill, but I’m confident in the choices DC has made as they have been having huge success lately in creative team changes. It’s been such an honor to review Justice League and as a fan, it’s been a true gift from Scott Snyder and company and I look forward to the future of the series as well! It’s always hard to see a change, but it’s been exciting seeing the new teams come in as well over at DC.
