New Mutants #4 Review

Writer: Ed Brisson
Artist: Marco Failla
Publisher: Marvel Comics

Armor, Glob, Maxime, Manon, Beak, Angel and the kids are in serious trouble. Though help is on the way, she just may be a little drunk.

This issue was somewhat fun. It does feel very traditional in its story and tone. There really isn’t anything new other than the angle of Krakoa and the drugs they develop for nations that recognize Krakoa as a sovereign nation. What I think this team is relying on is the nostalgia of the return of popular older characters. Boom-Boom hasn’t been in the spotlight in a very long time. It’s been great to see her, despite another writer having a character dependant on alcohol. That being said is nostalgia enough?

Jonathan Hickman’s first few issues felt like it managed to mix all these elements while still feeling somewhat fresh and new. Ed Brisson attempts to do the same with a different set of nostalgic characters and some new characters, but it does not have the same effect. There’s just something missing. This issue especially just feels like X-Men by the numbers. Everything that happened was obvious and expected.

Overall this story is still a good read, and I don’t hate it. I just feel like we could have gotten something better.
