When they announced that Snoke would be one of the characters that would be getting a one shot in the Age of Resistance series, I was mildly surprised. Snoke is a character that has been kept pretty under wraps even after his death. Granted, there weren't too many big name villains in the sequel trilogy for Marvel to choose from, but still, this is Snoke's first appearance outside of films and film adaptations.

My assumption from the start was that this comic would have a pretty narrow scope and I wasn't wrong, the comic doesn't really provide any more context for the character than the films do. I wouldn't have expected any less and it's for the best, because there's no feasible way that they could have tried to give us context in a twenty page comic. As a result, the comic focuses on Kylo as much if not more than Snoke himself. In a way this is somewhat of a flaw because the comic is title Supreme Leader Snoke, but the comic still has enough focus on Snoke that it wasn't too much of a distraction for me. For what the comic is, it's really good.

Set seemingly not long after Ben Solo falls to the Dark Side and becomes Snoke's apprentice, the comic gives us a closer look at the dynamic between the two and Snoke's view of his apprentice. We get to see how he manipulates and controls the young Kylo as well as get some insights into his thoughts on Luke and knowledge of the past. Without giving away a big moment in the comic, we also see his biggest weakness from The Last Jedi on display again.

The comic is a really good character study for both Kylo and Snoke. It's interesting to see them in a familiar location from the original trilogy, and to get to see how they leave their mark on it. Kirk's art is definitely solid and captures the two main characters well, especially in how he deages Kylo to show this is closer to Ben's fall.

It's probably in my top five of the stories to come out of this whole maxiseries. It serves as a good example of an ideal issue for this series, encapsulating the essence of a character in a new story. The previous two issues, Poe and Hux, did similarly well. I had been getting a bit tired of the series after a year but this issue has made me intrigued to see how Taylor will handle the issue actually meant to focus on Kylo. I have high expectations for it and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next.
