House of X #3 Review

It begins. We have had a lot of issues of set up, laying down the ground work of this new world for the X-Men. We saw in the last issue Xavier and Magneto send Cyclops out with a team to stop the Mother Mold. This issue the team heads out on their assignment and things don’t go exactly as planned for either side.
I loved this issue a lot. It was nice to finally get some action and also see some characters we hadn’t seen yet, there’s a fan favourite, and also a much beloved younger mutant. Cyclops choice of team is incredible. It’s classic but very new and interesting. I think Jonathan Hickman picked a great a great team with a dynamic set of personalities to interact with. The team is also eight members which is a lot, seeing how normally a team consists of six X-Men.
There are so many cheer moments in this issue. One in particular I won’t spoil for you but it includes Emma Frost. I was so excited to see her, and wow Hickman took her right back to the sassy, posh, anti-hero we came to love in Grant Morrison’s run.
You can feel the anxiety for both sides as Hickman dials up the intensity as the issue progresses. We are left with a cliff hanger but the quote Hickman likes to close each issue with also adds to the excitement and anxiety this time, having us wonder what’s to come next. Will they succeed? Will they fail? Will someone fall? Will someone be forgotten?
The art in this series has been outstanding since the first issue. This issue though, as Hickman raises the intensity, Pepe Larraz mirrors that in the art perfectly. His panels are so exciting and engaging. Alongside Marte Gracia’s colors, the action just pops off the page. Even the reveal moments, like the one with Emma Frost, just stand out and pull you right into it. Larraz is obviously having the time of his life drawing this book, and it really shows.
Overall this is a jaw dropping book not to be missed. House of X continues to remain consistent delivering one of the best stories we have ever gotten in the X-books. This issue finally brings some action, and wow does it ever deliver on that as well.
