Age of X-Man: The Amazing Nightcrawler #3 Review

Writer: Seanan McGuire
Artist: Juan Frigeri
Publisher: Marvel Comics

This books comes off like a bad Jem and the Holograms episode. Complete with do gooder mission and "hey that's our stage not yours" with the Misfists of the book, Wyngarde Studios. Three issues in and this book continues to disappoint.

I would have hoped that at this point this book would have started to take us somewhere. That it would finally start showing us it's purpose in Age of X-Man. Nightcrawler boasts things are hard for him, yet they are anything but that. He makes a comment in this issue "when did the world decide to stop making sense?" I think the real question is, when does this book start making sense!? He has telepaths around yet he can keep his relationship with Meggan so easily a secret??

Also in this issue we see Mystique show up, and she wants to tell Nightcrawler something but for no reason just decides no to and runs away. It's apparent that Nightcrawler has no idea who she is but the scene is right out of a children's Saturday morning cartoon. The dialogue is so lacking in any substance and Mystique even knees him in the balls to get away. This book can now add slapstick comedy to it's list.

The art work in this book continues to be the only positive about it. It's bright, colorful, and the panels look dynamic and engaging. I would love to see Juan Frigeri on a better x-book. His talents are going to waste on such a disappointing book. I hope Marvel can see that where this book went wrong is in the writing and give Frigeri a chance to show his talents in a higher profile x-book.

Overall this book has proven to be a wasted chance at a could've been good series. I find it hard for even hardcore Nightcrawler fans to be on-board with this. The book has no affect on the larger story and gives the reader no real reason why they should even invest in it. Especially when there are five other mini-series to collect.
