The Transformers have been mired in a slew of crossover titles for years now and understandably so - they are the premiere licensed franchise from IDW that has fans worldwide and even 30+ years after their introduction, continue to grow.
On the other hand, you have the Visionaries - a long-lost toy line that is probably fondly remembered by a few, but forgotten by most. As I mentioned in my review of the first issue, I still remember my one and only Visionary action figure from my childhood, and I am thankful for this series for giving it a name.
So, now that the mini-series has come to an end, have the Visionaries established enough to stake a claim in the Hasbro Universe? I would say that could go either way depending on how you look at it.
The series itself, as a self-contained storyline, was a lot of fun and introduced some neat concepts like the Transformers vulnerabilities to the Visionaries’ magic. It also killed off a long-standing favourite to drive that point home. It also succeeded in changing Cybertron as a planet as well, but, to avoid spoilers, I will leave out how in this review.
That’s the good of the series. The bad, is quite simple: after five issues, the Visionaries themselves return to a status quo. There are slight differences in their situation from issue one, but in hindsight, they are very minor changes that barely make a difference in the grand scheme of things.
Would I recommend this mini to anyone who has yet to read it? I would say yes, especially if you were a fan of the Visionaries prior to this or would like to learn a little bit more about them.
