Action Comics has reached a milestone that no other comic has in that it is hitting issue #1000! With the release of this issue we also hit 80 years of Superman comics. Wow how incredible is that!? The man of Steel has been inspiring people young and old for 80 years now and so many more to come.
Action Comics #1000 is a giant issue consisting of a huge list of talented creators all contributing to this milestone issue. The book consists of many short stories but with some of the top talent in the comics industry. Each of the stories in this book touches on an era of Superman comics. Emulating not only the look and tone of the era but the feeling of nostalgia exudes off every page.
You can really get a sense of love for the character from everyone involved in this project. While some of the stories are light and fun, some of them dive deep into the psychology of Superman, his villains and relationships with Lois, Jon, and the world at large.
For me I love a good emotional story that really pulls you in. While some of the more campy stories were fun, the cheese factor was definitely showing. But there are several stories that really had me and my favorite of them all was Geoff Johns and writer, director Richard Donner’s amazing throwback to Superman in the 1930s. With breathtaking art by Olivier Coipel this story just blew me away with it simplicity. It’s something that I would really love to see, an ongoing or mini-series of Superman in the 1930s with this creative team. It goes to show you that a story can be just as engaging with great characters and dialogue. You don’t need big action sequences when your writers and artists are at this level of talent.
The last story in this book is from new comer to the Man of Steel, Brian Michael Bendis with art by legend Jim Lee. This story is a teaser for things to come and leaves us with a pretty big cliffhanger. Being a long time Marvel fan, I know that Bendis likes to shake things up and that’s very apparent here. DC is giving him room to run with this story even if it might possibly be retconning a major part of Superman history. We are just going to have to wait and see what Bendis has in store for Clark.
If you’re a Superman fan then I recommend picking this book up. There is so much fun and nostalgia in every one of the 92 pages. Those that want to jump into reading Superman books, there is no better place than this one. It will give you a brief look over of his history and the teaser of where things will be going. This was a good fun read.
