Jem and the Holograms: Dimensions #4

This is a heartbreaking week because here we have the final issue in the Jem and The Holograms: Dimensions series. I honestly can’t even believe it’s only been four issues because I feel like this series has provided so much to me these four months. Every issue was great and this issue is no different.

Our first story, “Tasty,” written by Sina Grace and illustrated by Hannah Templer is an absolute delight to read all the way through. The dialogue in this story was hilarious and fit perfectly for each character. I’m also going to go on record with something pretty huge: Hannah Templer’s illustrations of The Misfits is my all time favorite portrayal of any artwork I have seen of them yet. I may have said something similar before, but this tops it. There is just something about the way the characters are illustrated that really fits so perfectly with the girls and especially the story. I will be in search of her work from here on out.

The second story, “Jemojis,” is another great story following The Misfits that is full of humor. Kevin Panetta’s concept for this story is fun and really well done. Artist Abby Boeh and colorist Heather Danforth artwork is awesome and unique. The style reminded me of comics in punk zines that I used to read when I was younger. The colors are strong but they’re done at the exact strength that compliments the Jem universe perfectly. This story is hilarious and entertaining and is a great last story to end this beautiful series with.

I’m sad to see this series end but I am very glad that we got these four issues. As sad as it is when anything this good comes to a close, we can always look at the bright side. That bright side for me is now knowing all of these different writers and artists that were assigned stories in these four issues. I would not have known about most of them if it wasn’t for their incredible work in one of these issues. If you are reading this, you more than likely clicked it because you have some sort of interest in Jem comics. You owe it to yourself to pick this issue up along with the other three. If you stumbled on this review with little or zero knowledge of the Jem universe, you still owe it to yourself to pick these four issues up.

Group editor Sarah Gaydos mentions in her intro to this issue that if we want to see more Jem and the Holograms from IDW Publishing that we should contact them on Twitter or email them letting them know. When the initial series ended I was saddened to think that that was it for these characters. But along came this series and filled a void for me.
