Dark Nights Metal #5

When I read the last issue I felt that Snyder and Capullo had set up too many ideas too close to the end of the series. I wasn’t so sure if each cool idea would be resolved well, as opposed to it feeling cheap. As I got through issue 5 of Metal it made me realise one of the aspects about Metal that I really enjoyed and appreciated. Snyder and Capullo have been throwing crazy and bombastic ideas, throughout Metal, but at the same time each idea is given time to be resolved.
One of the strengths of Snyder in this series is that he doesn’t fall into the usual tropes and pitfalls. Often books near the end want to give heroes that moment everything turns around, but this is often done too early and can make the ending feel slightly hollow. In this issue Snyder does give the heroes a fighting chance however by the end it still feels hopeless. We are also given an explanation of Barbatos’ plan, which is really intriguing.
Often in comics, when there is an event that will affect the earth, you see the really cool moment where heroes and villains do join together to face the threat. Like many things it feels like a cool idea at first, but does feel stale now as it happens so regularly. Instead in here Snyder has villains who have sided with the ‘threat’ which does make a lot of sense.
Instead of focusing on Batman and Superman this issue, Snyder chooses to follow Wonder Woman the most through this issue, and that isn’t a bad thing. Snyder uses the idea of perseverance and applies that to Wonder Woman. The Batman Who Laughs says that in every world he has been to, she fights till the end, which does really highlight of the character.
In this review I purposely did want to leave a lot of specific details out, so that you pick up the issue as it is a really good issue. One criticism I would say is that although Capullo’s art is good for the most part, I do think there does need to be more detail in his background characters. I feel Metal has been strong overall from start to finish and I am really hoping that it doesn’t fumble that near the end.
