Jughead: The Hunger may officially be my favorite Archie Horror series. I may just feel that way because this series is actually consistent unlike the others, but I am enjoying the series so much! I am a huge horror fan and especially love old school horror and monsters. This series is a great portrayal of classic horror because it captures the feeling and aesthetic of classic monsters movies and other media.
This third issue has so much going on and pushes the story forward quickly but not too quickly. We pick up where we left off in the last issue, Bingo, Jughead’s cousin, attempting to convince Jughead to give in to the werewolf instead of feeling guilty. Jughead is still our beloved good guy though and struggles with embracing his new form. All the while, Archie, Betty, and her cousin Bo continue to hunt Jughead and prepare to kill him.
One of the great things about this issue is that it continues to give what the first two issues gave us: horror, drama, a little bit of humor, and, of course, gore. This issue is full of some great action, but that action would not be as fun without the drama. The storylines written into this series are not the most original but it doesn’t matter because they’re both sad and exciting.
To add to what I said about the last issue, the rogue group of werewolves lead by Reggie is still my favorite storyline of the series. We now see that that group has grown and I’m so excited to see this vengeful group of monsters go after their target.
All the greatness of this issue is only made more great by the artwork. The team of the artist working on this series are the absolute perfect match. They make the issue gritty and dark, which further gives the book the classic horror feeling.
This issue is an amazing follow up to the last issue and a perfect teaser for the next issue, which is sure to be full of action and violence. This series has taken our favorite beloved residents of Riverdale and is showing them in this dark and horrific story. For this to be done right, you need the right team of writers and artists, and that right team is Frank Tieri, Pat and Tim Kennedy, and Joe Eisma. Do yourself a favor and see what I mean by picking up this incredible third issue along with the first two and you will not be disappointed.
