A dying emperor’s magical cure. 5 short comics collected in one pocket sized volume. Written by Amy Chu & illustrated by Craig S. Yeung, Silvio DB, Louie Chin & Cabbral.

The Pros

This was a very pleasant collection of short comics. Serious themes like war & the reality of growing old are explored with moments of humour & irony. Every story has little twist endings that I didn’t see coming, mostly because I wasn’t expecting it to go in that direction. Particularly ‘Saving Abby”, pay close attention to the backgrounds and surroundings and see if you can guess the ending. Pretty smart. Chu’s impressive writing skills remind me a little bit of Terry Moore’s (Echo, Strangers In Paradise) style. Human beings interacting with each other and the obstacles they must overcome.

The illustrations are decent enough with some straight forward panels. My favourite penciller is without a doubt Cabbral, here’s an artist who I could see working on fantasy comics like Conan or Thor.

The Cons

This is a minor complaint, but I wish these stories were a tad longer.

The Outcome

I enjoyed the hell out of this little book, grant it, it’s not the type of comic we normally review on this website, but we’re always looking to broaden our horizons with creative & original work. I look forward to more of Amy Chu’s comics.
