So we get the pleasure of diving back into one of my favourite corners of the Valiant Universe with Divinity #0. Last time we saw our hero was at the end of Divinity Stalinverse. This issue quickly summarizes the earlier series right up to the final battle with Kazmir who had created the Stalinverse. We then check in with Abram who is touring the Valiant Universe to check in and make sure everything has gone back to the way it was supposed to. One of the first things we learn is that that the Russian superhero team the Brigade has somehow survived the dissolution of the Stalinverse and is now kicking around the real universe. I am glad to see this, as I had wondered if these really cool Stalinverse Characters would be just one offs, which would have been a shame. It looks like writer Matt Kindt is setting them up for bigger things, which is exciting to me. We then move onto Bloodshot, Divinity makes an offer to Bloodshot. We get a check up on the Imperium characters, which is nice since other than Toyo Harada we haven't really seen any of them since the series ended(which you should go back and read), followed by Ninjak and X-O Manowar, two other characters that Kindt has touched. And then there is a shocking ending which I will not spoil but big things are coming for these characters.
The art is a painted style that is oddly enjoyable. Sometimes it is a bit hard to tell whats going on, but it's oddly appealing to me. It's art, not comic book art, but just art. Just beautiful pages. My favourite page is probably when Divinity visits X-O Manowar on the alien planet he is currently on, just gorgeous stuff. Excellent job by Renato Guedes.
This was a book were nothing really happened. There wasn't a huge battle or an evil mastermind threatening humanity. It was a subtle well written story that didn't waste a single page. Matt Kindt's titles for Valiant have kept my love of comics from dying. Divinity has been a throwback to the greatest Sci Fi stories of all time. A beautifully written story that doesn't rely on alien invasions or witty jokey characters. It's everything that classic Sci Fi was. This issue was introspective, and more cerabral. It was just so well written that I leave the issue excited for having read it, and even more excited to read what comes next, and isn't that the whole point of reading comics.
Overall this series has been one of my favourites. I don't mean in modern day comics, I mean this is one of my favourite stories of all time. I love it so much it is just brilliant. The art might be a little off putting at first, but the story is what sells it. So call your local comic shop right now, and get them to hold a copy of it, then read all the other reviews on this site of course, and then go and buy it.
