Weekly Spinner Picks is all about the hot comics of the week and getting to know the tastes of the writers at Comics: The Gathering. Each week the CTG contributors spotlight which comics they are most looking forward to on Wednesday and how those picks got to the top of their to-read piles. Let us know if you agree or not with our picks and most importantly don’t forget to add your list!

Darth Vader #5: Writer Kieron Gillen and artist Salvador Larroca continue the Dark Lords investigation into the Emperor. This issue promises new mysterious rivals who are trying to stop Vader from learning the truth. Marvel has really done amazing job with all the Star Wars related titles since acquiring the licence but this series has been the best. Every issue has been fantastic with no signs of slowing down. It’s been really cool seeing everything through Vader’s point of view.

Secret Wars #2: Well issue one certainly ended with a bang! Writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Esad Ribic have destroyed the Marvel Universe and all that is left is Battleworld. There was definitely enough great moments in the first issue to merit continuing buying this series. I am a tad worried as quite a few Marvel events have started off strong only to end weakly. I’m hoping that’s not the case as we learn more about the secrets of this new realm.

Black Science #14: I’m a big fan of this world writer Rick Remender and artist Mateo Scalero have developed over 13 issues. I’d say it’s one of my all time favorite titles published by Image Comics. It features great storytelling with just absolutely wonderful artwork. This is one of those titles that’s always near the top of my to-read pile whenever it comes out.

Harrow County #1:  A southern gothic tale written by Cullen Bunn and drawn by BPRD’s Tyler Crook? Count me in!! From the preview pages I’ve seen this new Dark Horse title looks to provide some spooky fun!

Injection #1: This new title from Image comics has one heck of an all-star creative team, Warren Ellis, Declan Shalvey, and Jordie Bellaire. Those names alone make this an automatic purchase. This of course is the same team that brought us the critically acclaimed Moon Knight run last year. This series follows the lives of 5 crazy people who poison the 21st century and now have to deal with the consequences by trying to save what’s left that can still support human life.

Space Riders #2: This is part 2 of a new mini-series by Black Mask Studios. To be honest I missed issue one but the second print is also coming out this week so I’ll scooping up both. It’s written by Fabian Rangel and drawn by Alexis Zirrit. It’s getting great reviews and the cover for second printing of issue one looks bananas!

This week is crazy!

Harrow County #1: Described by Mike Mignola as both charming and creepy, this new ongoing Dark Horse book by Cullen Bunn and Tyler Crook is right down my alley. Emmy, a maybe possessed teenage girl, is starting her journey towards discovering that spirits, demons included, are very real. (PS I already read this one and it's a 10/10)

Copperhead #7: Have you guys read my reviews of the other issues in this incredible ongoing Image series? If you have, it shouldn't surprise you at all that this is on my list.

Injection #1: I'm not totally sure I get what this new Warren Ellis series is going to be about because the adverts for it have been kind of...cryptic but, the creative team is so good that I have to give it a shot.

Rebels #2: Brian Wood has been nominated for a number of Eisner awards for good reason. This series, albeit with a weirdly overwhelming start, is looking to be no different.

Lantern City #1: I haven't ever been into the Steampunk aesthetic really but this new Boom! mini-series looks like it takes that setting without overdoing it and I'm into that, for sure.

Injection #1: Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey defined Moon Knight for me with their fantastic run. I was extremely disappointed that they were leaving the title. However, when Injection was announced I felt like the void they left would soon be filled. I know nothing about this series and I don’t want to know anything until I read it later this week. Declan Shalvey is one of the best artists working today and after finished Planetary, I couldn’t be more open to Warren Ellis. Bring on Injection!

Secret Wars #2: Jonathan Hickman destroyed the Marvel universe in the greatest way possible with Secret Wars #1. It had the perfect combination of epic-scale and small moments. When Punisher burst into the end of the world villains’ party, I understood that this won’t just be any event. This is Hickman’s love letter to the Marvel Universe and its history. Issue #2 is going to establish Battle World and finally clear up all the murky details about its functions. I’m sure it’s going to be awesome and I can’t wait!

Thor #8: For a company that loves to spoil big status-quo shifts, I’m incredibly surprise that the new Thor’s identity has remained hidden for so long. We’ve gotten some solid hints and I don’t think I’ll be too surprised but that doesn’t matter. The characters are the reason I read this book and I can’t wait to see their reactions. Bucky’s reveal in Winter Soldier wasn’t surprising but it worked because of what it did to Steve. I’m hoping Jason Aaron will be able to convey a similar effect, here.

Darth Vader #5: Darth Vader has just been plain awesome. After Star Wars’ first good but not great issue, I think DV has risen to the top of the Star Wars titles. Kieron Gillen just captures Vader so well and while his story isn’t the greatest, it still manages to be a great read every time. Gillen hinted at a larder story last issue and I’m hoping that’ll come into play, here. Either way, we’re going to get amazing Vader moments and that’s something I always look forward to.

While Jonathan Hickman tries his best to destroy the Marvel Universe, everybody is trying their best to wrap things up and get to the secret warrin.' Ms Marvel is one title that's been gauranteed a spot post Secret Wars (I think) and this week's issue #15 should be another entry in G Willow Wilson's stellar run.

I came in here thinking Steve didn't pick up Secret Wars #2 and I was going to shame him into grabbing a copy.  Glad to see it was on your list.  I don't know why, but when marvel shows an annexed map of a world with hero/villain territories it gets me every time.
