After months of hype and build up, Joker War is finally here.
We’ve all been waiting what feels like forever to get here with the Covid 19 outbreak causing a pause in the comic world but things have been rolling smoothly ever since and it now time to dive in to what has been the most anticipated story from DC outside of Death Metal. We have had a few big Joker arcs in the past but nothing quite as big as this one with several other titles being pulled in with tie in issues such as Nightwing, Batgirl, Detective Comics, and evening Harley Quinn. With the wait finally over, has it all been worth it?

For Batman #95 Tynion takes readers back in time to an early interaction Batman has with the Joker while Alfred was still living. Tynion uses this as kind of a foundation to build the rest of the story on and to give readers a deeper understanding of how we got to the current time in the story and it really helps with our understanding of the events as they unfold in this issue. This issue is not quite as exciting as the last two have been and I feel like the base he sets up in this issue really should have been done in a previous issue to help make the first part of this story kick off with a bang rather then use it as another issue to lay the ground work for the inevitable war to come. Although it lays more of a foundation, the story does eventually pick up and begin to get exciting towards the end as Batman meets his match in Punchline for the first time and the events of the beginning come full circle and sets us up for what is sure to be an action packed next issue, hopefully. The story does jump quite fast but I don’t think that was on Tynion as it feels like it was necessary when the issue was originally written as it was to be the final arc of the current Batman series and even with its faults, Tynion works his magic of sprinkling in bits and pieces that rewards readers and keeps them interested in the story.

For the art of this issue we see the return of Jorge Jimenez who has been teasing is on social media with little sneak peeks here and there. Jimenez has also been tweeting a lot about how he has really been giving this story his all and how he hopes Batman fans will approve of what he has done and it is apparent from the first panel that Jorge gave this his all as it is easily some of the best art we have gotten in a Batman issue in a long time. Everything about the art of this issue is about as perfect as it we could hope for. The designs of all his characters are beautiful and perfect and there is not one panel you can find that lacks any detail. All the characters are beautifully detailed right down to the small line definitions in their faces and Jimenez’s design for Batman is easily the best he’s ever done.  His Joker design feels a bit familiar as he used more of a stock Joker design but the details he uses in the character really help set it apart from anyother Joker out there right now helping to set him apart from others. The colors of this issue are done by Tomeu Morey who we have come to expect great work from and he does not disappoint in this issue bringin Jorge’s work to life without taking anything away from the original pencils and details. The colors of this issue are all very sharp and vivid and there are some incredible details done in the colors that really make Jimenez’s work look even more incredible if you can believe it. Both of these artists really shine when their work comes together and overall this is just a gorgeous issue that pleases the readers eyes.

Batman #95 falls a little short of the hype that was built up around it but the creators were still successful in delivering something worthy of getting fans excited about and delivering some joy. The story digs deep and really explores more of an emotional side rather than a exciting side and the art team fires on all cylinders delivering one of the best looking Batman issues we have gotten so far in this series. This issue also gives us hope that bigger and more exciting things are to come and I know personally it did a good job of hooking me and getting me on board for the rest of the arc. Batman #95 is available now at your local comic shop as well as via digital download if you prefer to read them digitally.
