Powerpuff Girls Super Smash Up #1
Writer: Derek Charm
Artist: Derek Charm
Publisher: IDW Publishing
The city of Townsville’s favourite little super girls can now place masters of multi-verse travelling to their list of accomplishments. This brand new series follows after the events of “Super Secret Crisis War”, taking the Powerpuff Girls on a new multi-verse adventure. Don’t worry. It’s not incredibly necessary to read “Super Secret Crisis War” to understand what’s going on in “Powerpuff Girls Super Smash Up #1” – although I’d recommend it just for fun! In fact, the first issue of “PPG: Super Smash Up” does a good job at laying down the foundations all on its own. It’s a pretty simple premise actually: Save Dexter’s sister DeeDee/Save the multi-verse from Deedee.
While Derek Charm may have a straight forward narrative in his hands, he still manages to pack issue one with energy and joyful moments. Professor Utonium fangirling over the chance to tour Dexter’s laboratory is definitely chuckle worthy and “hairy hillbilly of hate” is just as pleasantly fun to read out loud as it is to see on page. For anyone who has or continues to watch Cartoon Network programs, the characters in issue one will feel satisfyingly familiar. Evidently, Derek Charm knows these characters very well and captures each individual respectively.
The art and writing are solidly united – helps when Derek Charm has handles on both aspects. He uses dense black lines on the characters which makes them boldly pop from the pages. Pretty spot on with the way the characters appear in their own shows. They’re colourful and wildly animated, providing plentiful vigor to the script. It’s apparent that Charm is passionate about the characters through his attention to accuracy. Also, this is territory he’s treaded on before (he drew for “Super Secret Crisis War” too).
For a premier issue, it’s fast, fun and sets a light tone. It should be easy for just about anyone to read: kids and old fans like me. But it might not be enough to reel in those not acquainted with Cartoon Network. It’s still, however, an exciting lead in to the Powerpuff Girls teaming up with different characters each issue. Derek Charm has a great set of resources that can keep this series refreshing and entertaining until the end. Let’s just hope he does.
