Lobster Johnson volume 1: The Iron Prometheus

by stephengervais on April 08, 2012

Lobster Johnson is a no-nonsense, pulp hero who takes on the Nazis in the 1930s. He’s made several appearances in both Hellboy and B.P.R.D. over the years. This trade paperback written by Mike Mignola and drawn by Jason Anderson collects his first stand-alone adventure originally published as a 5 issues mini-series.

Not really an essential read to the Hellboy universe it is nonetheless an entertaining adventure. LJ and his team battle mobsters, Nazis, and monsters in a good old fashioned action filled romp. The story itself is pretty minimal but effective for the desired pulp style. The artwork is clear and has a cartoon feel to it which suits this type of story perfectly.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Hellboy universe this story will not make a whole lot of sense to you and is probably best to avoid it. For those of you who are familiar with it, this is fun look into Lobster Johnson’s character and background but don’t expect any major revelations.
